In the best tradition of children’s television shows, “Los Algos” aims to help kids grow up smarter, kinder and happier. An original idea by Daniel Cerdà, Jaume Copons, Óscar Julve and Pol Mainat, the show brings the world of puppets into the 21st century and proves the potential of television as an educational medium.

In 2007 EPS was entrusted with the creation of the program’s logo, the on-air identity, promotional materials, brand guidelines, and the minute-long didactic films that would combine basic learning concepts with skits that children enjoy watching. The big challenge was to strike a balance between seriousness and fun that would appeal to preschoolers.

We teamed up with visual artist Pablo Carpio to create the logo and designed a fun, hand-drawn typeface that reflects the show’s bold, witty, and welcoming personality. Inside the two letters “O” a pair of eyes were placed to turn the logo into a wonderful character for which Rubén Algarra made an animated 3D model. We combined two expressive typefaces, Ed Gothic and Ed Roman by House Industries, to add unbalanced flourishes and create a cartoonish typographic language. Ed Gothic was also animated in 3D to give the on-air identity some extra punch.

To create the didactic films, EPS worked closely with the show’s producers and writers and three illustrators —Ritxi Ostáriz, César Barceló and Maria Picassó i Piquer— to create a dynamic creative process through animations and illustrations that spanned three years. Since we were given creative freedom with room for visual experimentation, the illustrators did not follow a specific style or aesthetic and let themselves be guided by their instincts. They developed all kinds of fun and endearing characters to address important subjects and demonstrated a skill for bringing stories to life with humour and imagination.
