Sean Mackaoui: Collage
Currently owned by AMC Networks International Southern Europe, Somos began its journey in 2005, sharing with the public a wide catalog of Spanish films produced throughout the 20th century.
When we were commissioned to create the channel’s logo and visual identity, we saw an opportunity to create an eclectic, optimistic and vibrant visual world that would reflect the positive and welcoming personality of the channel and connect with 21st century viewers who want to watch classic Spanish films at home.
The Chalet New York Nineteen Seventy typeface (by House Industries), chosen for its pop character, was used to create a compact wordmark. The balance of curves was carefully crafted —the letter “S” was redrawn to form a ligature with the letter “O”— to enhance the symmetry of the word “somos” and its friendly, approachable appearance.
We teamed up with collage artist Sean Mackaoui to create a set of 10-second idents that draw upon the rich creative heritage of advertising from the 1950s and 1960s, and hint at the fantasy world of cinema and the thin line between reality and fiction that is crossed when entering the TV screen from the living room.
On the border of various territories —art, crafts, motion graphics and television language— the idents elicit humor and a surreal form of beauty that feels simultaneously vintage and contemporary and leave the viewer with a sense of wonder.
