Written, directed and produced by Pilar Pérez Solano, winner of the Goya Award for Best Documentary Film in 2014 for “Las Maestras de la República” (The Women Teachers of the Republic), the 2019 documentary “La Defensa, por la Libertad” (Advocacy, for Freedom) tells the story of the Spanish legal profession from the mid-1960s to 1978, with unpublished images and testimonies from prestigious lawyers who raised the flag of law, justice and democracy, while the specter of the Civil War still haunted Spain.

The intricacies of the legal profession during the late Franco regime transcend what would seem to be a private, sectoral issue. The practice of law resulted not only in an improvement of the guild but also in the vindication of the rights of all Spaniards. The voices of Manuela Carmena, Óscar Alzaga, Cristina Almeida, Antonio Garrigues Walker, Pablo Castellano, Miquel Roca Junyent, and Paca Sauquillo, among others, highlight the extraordinary role they played in the democratization of Spain.

EPS has designed the title sequence and a graphic identity for the film that sets an elegant and timeless journalistic atmosphere that allows today’s testimonials to coexist seamlessly with black and white images and press clippings from the 60s and 70s. The design employs bold red underlining and watercolor stains and tints in cold and warm hues to link the old with the new in the same space, providing a little extra punch and connecting the challenging years of the late Franco regime with today’s retrospective gaze.

The logotype is set in Bebas Neue (designed by Ryoichi Tsunekawa) in a stacked configuration. The strong lettering conveys the paramount importance of law in society and serves as a window for a variety of colorful images that will be seen throughout the documentary.
